![]() Devo Formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1973 by Bob Casale, Gerald Casale, Bob Lewis, Rod Reisman, and Fred Weber, the band Devo is frequently described as art rock or post-punk. Devo is most often remembered for its New Wave sound, which ushered in 1980s synth pop. Secret Agent Man, one of its pioneering music videos, was very popular in the early days of MTV. The name Devo is related to the concept of de-evolution—the idea that instead of evolving, humankind is regressing—a word coined by Gerald Casale and Lewis during their time at Kent State University in the late 1960s.
