Five for Friday: Éire go Brách

Five for Friday, written by a variety of MoMA staff members, is our attempt to spotlight some of the compelling, charming, and downright curious works in the Museum’s rich collection.

As any member of my (typically large) Irish American family would be more than happy to tell you (at length), the Irish are great storytellers. Luckily for you, a picture is worth 1,000 words, so I’ll spare you a long-winded introduction and simply say…

Happy (early) Saint Patrick’s Day!

Five for Friday: Ready for the Show?!?

Five for Friday, written by a variety of MoMA staff members, is our attempt to spotlight some of the compelling, charming, and downright curious works in the Museum’s rich collection.

The works have been selected. Handlers contracted. Opening parties and after-parties and after-after-parties arranged. It’s almost time for the cultural glitterati to come together and salute each other’s art (and, just as important, artful outfits). Yes, the Armory Show is nearly upon us!

With Valentine’s Day just a few days off (thank you, Hallmark and Tiffany’s, for the e-mail reminders), we thought a look at some love- and not-quite-so-love-themed works in the collection was in order. Enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Day!

Five for Friday: Mad for Design

With negotiations for Mad Men season five underway and the return date still unknown, I’m getting antsy for a little Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce in my life. One of the many reasons this arty gal has sparked to the show is the impeccable art direction. And I’m not talking about the advertising, though the show’s pretty good at that, too. No, I’m talking about those gorgeous design objects that define the modern work space of the 1950s and 60s. So on this Friday, I thought I’d take a step into the corner office of Don Draper with some of the works from our architecture and design collection.

Five for Friday: This One Goes to 11

“I went to my friend’s house one day, and he had an electric guitar he had just bought with a tiny little amp. I turned the volume up to 10 and I hit one chord, and I said, I’m in love.” – Ace Frehly (Kiss)

“The most important part of my religion is to play guitar.” – Lou Reed

Despite several abortive attempts over the years, I never learned to play the guitar. At every turn I’ve been thwarted by laziness, a lack of dedication, and a set of 10 thumbs. This has made finding work in my chosen vocation—globe-trotting rock megastar—rather difficult.

I was out enjoying a few drinks recently when a friend informed me a sitcom had stolen my running gag. “[Popular network show],” he said, “had an episode where all the characters competed to see how many things they could touch at [uptown museum]…that’s totally your bag!”
