Composed by arranging semi-industrial building materials, this work belongs to the artist's Elements series, begun in 1985, which dissects and reconfigures the vocabulary of vernacular architecture. The sculpture's individual components recall aspects of domestic space—doors, windows, drawers—while the disjunctive composition denies the viewer entry. This tension or balance between the private and the public is central to Armajani's practice, which often takes the form of communal spaces, such as bridges, gardens, and reading rooms. The artist has acknowledged the importance of this careful equilibrium, saying, "By focusing on the parts, rather than the whole, I am trying to substitute synergy for gestalt."
