Hayter founded Atelier 17 in Paris in 1927 as an artist-run workshop for experimentation in printmaking, specifically focusing on etching and engraving. At the outset of the war, Hayter decided to leave France and eventually received permission to immigrate to the United States. He ultimately relocated to New York, where he was able to restart the workshop at the New School for Social Research. Fostering an environment of collaboration, it became a gathering point for European émigrés and artists of the emerging New York School, including Louise Bourgeois and Jackson Pollock.
