The Ramones

The Ramones released their first album, The Ramones, on April 23, 1976. When the punk-rock quartet from Queens, New York, hit the street that year, the rock scene had become somewhat bloated. The Ramones got back to basics—voice, guitar, bass, drums, and no nonsense—to make simple, speedy, stripped-down songs. Widely cited as the first punk-rock group, they helped downsize rock from arenas and stadiums to the more sensibly scaled grassroots environs of clubs and neighborhood holes-in-the-wall.
