As an admirer of both Cindy Sherman and John Waters, I was happy to see a conversation between the artists included in Cindy Sherman, the exhibition catalogue accompanying the Museum’s major retrospective of the artist’s work.

In concert with the current photography exhibition Eugène Atget: “Documents pour artistes”, MoMA has republished Atget, a richly illustrated title first published by the Museum in 2000.
Some of Cindy Sherman’s characters bring an immediate context to mind. You gaze at the picture, and there’s the flood of a specific time and place. A scene forms and the figure becomes the protagonist of a narrative. Others are, at first take, more obscure or bizarre.
One of the most exciting features of the Cindy Sherman exhibition is Sherman’s photographic mural, which is making its North American premiere at MoMA.

Among his many contributions to photography in a long and productive life, Edward Steichen (1879-1973) was a master portraitist, capturing, in now-iconic images, sitters as diverse as Gloria Swanson, Winston Churchill, and Walt Disney (and friends).
