Some visitors to MoMA’s Endless House: Intersections of Art and Architecture exhibition tell me Frederick Kiesler’s designs don’t have enough windows. His Endless House couldn’t have connected the inhabitants with their environment, they say, comparing Kiesler’s model to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, a glass and steel box intended to float among the trees.

From an initial gift of eight prints and one drawing in 1929, MoMA’s collection has bloomed to nearly 200,000 works across six curatorial departments—Painting and Sculpture, Drawings and Prints, Media and Performance Art, Photography, Film, and Architecture and Design—including everything from Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) to Maya Deren’s lush film Meshes of the Afternoon

Experiencing Andrea Geyer’s Insistence at MoMA

A large video projection opens with a view of a finely stained wooden surface. The hand of an unidentified woman appears on the right and a postcard portrait of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller—who, along with Lillie P. Bliss and Mary Quinn Sullivan, founded The Museum of Modern Art in 1929—is strategically placed in the center of the frame.

Modern Matinees: Ernst Lubitsch’s Trouble in Paradise

There is an old-fashioned expression about “honor among thieves.” What does this mean exactly? Perhaps this group swears an oath that no one criminal will interfere in the nefarious actions of another? If the question leaves you flummoxed, be sure to see the 1932 film Trouble in Paradise for an enjoyable resolution.

For many of us, the desire to escape on vacation reaches its apex every August. As heat permeates our daily landscapes and the slower pace of late summer drapes us in languor, we seek out calm country lakes, the majestic ocean, or perhaps a hidden swimming hole.
