This gallery’s architectural elements, such as the walls and passageways, are delineated by strips of black tape that are marked with their measurements. Bochner first installed Measurement Room at Galerie Heiner Friedrich in Munich, Germany, in May 1969, where he similarly measured and recorded the dimensions of one of the gallery’s rooms. Bochner realized this work at MoMA several times, most recently in this same room in 2009. “The viewer ‘inhabits’ a conceptual space which has been superimposed over an existing physical space,” he explained. “Perceptually the room becomes an object in reverse, a negative of itself, a place turned inside-out.”

The current installation is in memoriam of Bochner, an early practitioner of Conceptual art, who died earlier this year at the age of eighty-four.
