Lithograph, with watercolor additions
These four hand-colored lithographs were made during a summer the artists Marguerite and William Zorach spent in Randolph, New Hampshire. The couple stayed on the farm of the artist and collector Hamilton Easter Field, whose Summer School for Graphic Arts in Maine brought visiting artists into contact with American antiques and vernacular objects. Early appreciators of American folkart, the Zorachs later visited the school and sourced examples from the surrounding New England region for their own collection. Marguerite was particularly inspired by the color and flat, bold patterns she found in folk art, such as the hooked rugs visible in these prints.
