Degas’s meandering railway travel through the French countryside compelled him to make a small number of landscapes. This monotype—made by painting onto a metal plate and pressing it to paper—contains sweeping hills and valleys. Explaining these verdant scenes to a friend, he wrote, “I would stand at the door of the coach, and as the train went along I could see things vaguely.” Degas believed that in the blur of movement only the most important forms would impress themselves upon his memory, to be recollected later in his studio.
