Usher Fellig became Arthur Fellig at the age of 10, when he entered the United States through Ellis Island. He had arrived in New York from Zloczow, Poland (now part of Ukraine) in 1910 with his family; they were fleeing another wave of violent pogroms that had begun sweeping across the Pale of Settlement in 1903.
