“An echo of violence, disappointment and guilt was sealed into the postwar urban environment,” observed Struth. In these black-and-white photographs, the artist documents major cities in Germany, Japan, and the United States. His haunting views of unpopulated streets offer portraits of three countries that were fundamentally reshaped by the economic and social transformations that followed the Second World War.
