Venus in Two Acts by Saidiya Hartman was first published in 2008 in Small Axe, a Caribbean journal of criticism, in an issue on the archaeologies of Black memory. This essay has been reprinted with permission of the author in a new zine by Cassandra Press, an artist-run publishing and educational platform founded by Kandis Williams. Initially distributed to students of Cassandra Press and art and community-based organizations as a small print edition, the publication can be viewed online here. This zine was published in 2021 by Cassandra Press in collaboration with MoMA on the occasion of an installation of works from the Museum’s collection titled Critical Fabulations. The zine is supported by the Contemporary Drawing and Print Associates of The Museum of Modern Art.
