This wrought-iron grille was originally installed in a street-level window of the Casa Milá (La Pedrera), an apartment building in Barcelona designed by Gaudí, which features ornamental, naturalistic imagery typical of Art Nouveau. Critics have often dismissed Art Nouveau as superficial for a perceived preoccupation with ornate surface decoration, but this grille is an example of a complex negotiation between purely geometric and biotic form: its diamond-shaped pattern is curved to create a rippling surface that suggests the dynamic motion associated with living beings.
