Tebo worked from a young age as a studio assistant for the teacher, painter, and muralist Manuel Rodríguez Lozano, in Mexico City. Encouraged to draw by Rodríguez Lozano, Tebo became an accomplished draftsman and painter in the course of his short career. Of Nahua descent, he was one of the few contemporary Indigenous artists included in the 1940 exhibition Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art, at MoMA, where this small portrait of his mother was recognized for its “striking grandeur and intensity.”
