A self-described architect, William Scott creates paintings, drawings, and murals that envision a utopian future for his hometown of San Francisco. For nearly thirty years, Scott has made his art at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, the first progressive art studio in the United States dedicated to supporting artists with disabilities. Here, a city’s shimmering skyline is the backdrop for several Black celebrities as well as references to a series of imagined organizations that recur in Scott’s work, including Inner Limits and the Skyline Friendly Organization (SFO). This fantastical imagery is typical of the artist’s work, and reflects his core outlook: “William Scott is the amazing artist for peace,” he explains, “Be happy, Be a good man, Good memories thoughts, Wholesome Memory Thoughts.”
