Correa describes her process as analogous to painting or architecture: “You create your own canvas, strand by strand, like a mason placing the bricks that go into making an edifice.” Her love of texture and color is evident in the characteristically minimalist Mecca, one of the first works she publicly exhibited. Composed of superimposed rectangles, it is woven from thick handspun wool with “a grit and substantiality that gives a backbone to the weaving,” as Correa has described. The title alludes to the form of prayer rugs, imbuing the work’s spatial dynamics with a spiritual dimension.
