After his daughter’s early death, Frank’s grieving process found expression over multiple works, including this multipart montage, which was made in tribute to Andrea, though it does not include a figurative depiction of her. “This work was done in the ten years of my life when my life was most difficult—the tragedies that occurred,” Frank later recalled. “During that period I did express it—mostly in the Polaroids. . . . I would put one piece of wood on top of another, put a rock on top of that, then later maybe I photographed it—they become sort of monuments, and the photographs allow me to commemorate that."
