The Wagonaire was one of the last automobiles manufactured by Studebaker before the company folded in 1966. Starting with the 1939 Champion, Loewy’s office had designed a series of models for the company with low, streamlined bodies, including the now classic Starliner. Loewy was creative director but involved others with specific roles, such as Tom Kellogg, then a student at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, who worked up most of the presentation drawings. A unique Wagonaire feature was the retractable sliding rear roof section (engineered by Brooks Stevens) that allowed the vehicle to carry items that were too tall for other station wagons.
