There was growing public resistance in the late 1960s to the alternative lifestyle and values of the hippie movement, especially in San Francisco, its center. Moscoso recalls how, in the spring of 1967, "the SF police were cracking down in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. 'Dirty garbage pails' was the reason they gave for their strong arm and suppressing tactics. The neighborhood fought back with a 'Clean in' and these posters hung in just about every window. . . . A wonderful sight for me!" This was during the build-up to the Summer of Love, when as many as one hundred thousand people converged in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.
