For more than 50 years, MoMA has been presenting the work of Ken Jacobs in nearly every imaginable context and format—from gallery installations and Nervous System performances to the projection of 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, and cutting-edge computer technologies of his own devising—but never before in our Sculpture Garden. This program, presented by the filmmaker himself, spans the entirety of Jacobs’s career, from The Whirled (1956–63) to the world premiere of Abstract Eternalism (2021), with otherworldly explorations of paintings by Joan Mitchell and Jackson Pollock in the intercises. The screening also celebrates the Kino Lorber release of The Ken Jacobs Collection, a Blu-ray box set of 13 works, including MoMA’s own digital restoration of Tom Tom the Piper’s Son (1969).
