Director Mati Diop (whose short film Mille soleils entered MoMA’s collection in 2016) presents a captivating contemporary tale of migration from the vantage point of those left behind. Ada (brilliantly portrayed by Mama Sané) and her circle of women friends encounter fantastical and frightening new experiences after their boyfriends disappear at sea one night. The first film directed by a black woman to compete at Cannes, Atlantique (Atlantics) was awarded the 2019 Grand Prix by the jury.
