How much do you know about the three women who founded MoMA? Join us for a conversation on the critical roles Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and other women have played in the Museum’s history since its founding in 1929, organized in conjunction with the release of Inventing the Modern: Untold Stories of the Women Who Shaped The Museum of Modern Art. The discussion will be led by Ann Temkin, The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, Romy Silver-Kohn, co-editor with Temkin of Inventing the Modern, and best-selling author Sloane Crosley.
Inventing the Modern tells the stories of trailblazing women, from cofounder Abby Aldrich Rockefeller to longtime MoMA registrar Dorothy Dudley. Influential curators like Dorothy Miller shaped the course of American art, and inventive leaders like Sarah Newmeyer, the Museum’s first director of publicity, launched enterprising campaigns. They created new models for envisioning and operating a museum during an era when the field of modern art was uncharted territory. Nearly 100 years after MoMA’s founding, these women’s legacies continue to inspire and inform the Museum’s mission, reminding us of their pivotal role in shaping the landscape of modern art.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the conversation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Please enter through the Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder Building entrance at 11 West 53 Street. Advance registration is required and capacity is limited.
