The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. 2023. USA. Written and directed by Wes Anderson. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel. DCP. Courtesy Netflix. 39 min.
Building on the structural complexities and narrative experiments of his 2023 feature Asteroid City, Wes Anderson created four short adaptations of Roald Dahl stories for Netflix, of which The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, at a breezy 37 minutes, is the longest (and, alas, the only episode available for theatrical screening). Anderson offers an array of unreliable narrators, each telling intersecting, questionable stories about the fate of the title character (Benedict Cumberbatch), a wealthy layabout who learns the secret of seeing through objects from a traveling performer (Ben Kingsley), who learned it from a legendary yogi (Richard Ayoade). As the actors recite whole pages from the story, Anderson illustrates the action through a series of highly stylized theatrical tableaux that recall the early cinema of Georges Méliès and Segundo de Chomón.
