You Hurt My Feelings. 2023. USA. Written and directed by Nicole Holofcener. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins. DCP. Courtesy A24. 93 min.
Writer/director Nicole Holofcener’s latest cements her status as a singular chronicler of interpersonal relationships. With great charm and sharp humor, You Hurt My Feelings asks why we always hurt the ones we love. Chasing the massive success of her memoir, creative writing instructor Beth (a brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus) anxiously attempts to finish her debut novel. Meanwhile, her husband and biggest supporter Don (Tobias Menzies), a respected therapist, begins to feel he’s just not getting through to his patients anymore. When Beth discovers that Don may not like her new book, she spirals. Holofcener’s heartfelt and very funny script revels in the gray areas around how truthful we should really be to those we hold dear.
