When should a dream die? For swimmer Diana Nyad (incarnated here with transfixing determination by Annette Bening), the answer is “never!” In her 2013 attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida, Nyad battled the treacherous gulf stream waters—and her levelheaded best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster in her best role in years)—to achieve greatness at an age when most people have abandoned their deepest ambitions. Nyad is directed with vigor by Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Free Solo).
