About Dry Grasses. 2023. Turkey. Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Screenplay by Akin Aksu, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Ebru Ceylan. With Deniz Celiloglu, Merve Dizdar, Musab Ekici. DCP. Courtesy Sideshow/Janus Films. In Turkish; English subtitles. 197 min.
Art teacher Samet (Deniz Celiloglu) is entering the final year of a mandatory assignment in a small village whose remoteness and forbidding, wintry environment have left him feeling suffocated and restless. The presence of Nuray (Merve Dizdar, Cannes Best Actress award winner), a ravishing, enigmatic teacher from a neighboring school, offers a glimpse of romance and intellectual replenishment, but an incident with a student compels Samet to equally seek and reject self-reflection. Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s expansive, novelistic film is an ingenious if inconclusive portrait of human desires, beliefs, and actions.
