Spring Breakers. 2012. USA. Written and directed by Harmony Korine. With Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, James Franco. 35mm. 94 min.
Released in spring 2013, Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine's neon-drenched, dubstep-scored nightmare vision of the annual ritual for young Americans, introduced audiences to what would soon become a ubiquitous brand: A24 Films. Desperate for a respite from the humdrum of suburbia, four young women go to desperate lengths to make the pilgrimage to Florida for a week of debauchery. What unfolds is much more sinister, as the girls embark on a crime spree and link up with an arms dealer (James Franco). Ten years later, Spring Breakers is a fascinating relic of the period just before social media fully took over: it exudes pure adolescent hedonism, irreverence, and a disinterest in maintaining the kind of desirable lifestyle that plays for Instagram or a brand deal on TikTok. Disney sweethearts Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, playing reckless teens in full command of their sexuality and with a shocking capacity for violence, are brilliantly cast against type.
