Nope. 2022. USA. Written and directed by Jordan Peele. With Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Brandon Perea. DCP. 130 min.
Do we want to look away? Can we look away? Jordan Peele investigates America’s obsession with the dark side of spectacle in enormously entertaining fashion in Nope. Peele follows the entire life cycle of spectacle in the film, focusing the story around a pair of siblings (Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) struggling to keep their family business, Haywood Hollywood Horses, afloat after their father dies in a mysterious accident; Ricky Jupe (Steven Yeun), a former child actor who was witness to an infamous tragedy on a television set; and Angel Torres (Brandon Perea), a salesman at Fry’s Electronics. Throw in eccentric cinematographer Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott), and you have the entire ecosystem of the American entertainment complex, from creation to delivery into the family room. Peele, an ascendant film craftsman, knows how to keep a secret onscreen, and his direction allows the audience to remain as curious, enthralled, and on edge as his protagonists. Peele borrows from the greats (Spielberg, Hitchcock, Kubrick) to create the best kind of spectacle in 2022: one that has to be seen on the big screen. Courtesy Universal
