His House. 2020. USA/UK. Written and directed by Remi Weekes. Based on a story by Felicity Evans and Toby Venables. With Wunmi Mosaku, Sope Dirisu, Matt Smith. In English and Dinka with English subtitles. 93 min.
Having barely escaped death in war-torn South Sudan, a refugee couple find themselves in rundown public housing on the outskirts of London, at the mercy of the welfare system, unwelcoming neighbors, and the ghostly demons of their past. The damaged walls of their new home hide mysterious threats to their relationship that they must face body and soul. Fueled by pitch-perfect performances from rising stars Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu, writer/director Remi Weekes’s film takes familiar horror-film elements—haunted houses, witchcraft, madness—and fashions a gothic genre piece that reflects on the real-world tragedies of global politics, displacement, and the challenges of assimilation.
