Inherent Vice. 2014. USA. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. 148 min.
No one has ever accused Paul Thomas Anderson of being a coward (at least as a director), so who better to take on the first-ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel? As close as one could get to entering a time machine and reemerging in the pot-filled haze of early-1970's LA, Inherent Vice slithers and seduces in a frame that can barely contain it. The astonishing performances (channelings, really) by Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Katherine Waterson, and a coterie of cohorts will take you on a trip to a place between the known and unknowable. To be experienced sober at you own risk! Courtesy of Warner Bros.
