Wildlife. 2018. USA. Directed by Paul Dano. 104 min.
This poignant portrait of a struggling family marks actor Paul Dano’s impressive directorial debut, which he cowrote with Zoe Kazan based on Richard Ford’s novel. In a small town in 1960s Montana, Joe (Ed Oxenbould) lives with his parents Jeanette (Carey Mulligan) and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal). At the tender age of 14, Joe witnesses the disintegration of his family as his father’s struggles to hold down a job force Jeanette (wonderfully rendered by Mulligan) into a precarious balancing act between bearing the family’s financial burden, stroking her husband’s ego, and pursuing her own desires. This nostalgic heartbreaker pays tribute to the quiet dignity of ordinary folks. Courtesy of IFC Films
