BlacKkKlansman. 2018. USA. Directed by Spike Lee. 136 min.
Inspired by Ron Stallworth’s memoir detailing his infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, Spike Lee’s dazzling new pic is a biting commentary on American racial discourse then and now. Stallworth (John David Washington) arrives at the Colorado Springs Police Department as its first African American officer. Charismatic and sharp-tongued, he convinces his Jewish colleague Flip (Adam Driver) to help penetrate the heart of the KKK, earning the trust of, no less, its leader David Duke. While telling a story about the past, Lee has his sight on America today, which continues to fracture over racial injustice. Courtesy of Focus Features
