Deep Valley. 1947. USA. Directed by Jean Negulesco. Screenplay by Stephen Morehouse Avery, Salka Viertel. Based on the novel by Dan Totheroh. With Ida Lupino, Dane Clark, Faye Bainter. 35mm. 104 min.
Libby (Ida Lupino), unloved, uneducated, and living hand-to-mouth in a ruined shack, has essentially been removed from society. When a chain gang comes through to build a new road, Libby finds herself both attracted to and frightened by a young, uncontrollable convict named Barry. They run off together, but Barry’s volcanic rage makes Libby realize they will never have a happy life. In 1948 Ida Lupino became an American citizen, and shortly thereafter announced the formation of her production company, The Filmakers. MoMA has long been interested in collecting and preserving Lupino’s film work as both actress and director.
