Hunger. 2008. Great Britain. Directed by Steve McQueen. Screenplay by Enda Walsh, McQueen. With Michael Fassbender, Stuart Graham, Laine Megaw. 35mm. 96 min.
Hunger takes an up-close look at the suffering of Bobby Sands (Fassbender), the most radical among 10 Irish Republican Army members who went on a hunger strike in Belfast’s Maze prison in 1981 and eventually perished. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher refused to listen to the IRA inmates, who she considered criminals and not political prisoners. By the film’s conclusion it is impossible to pick out a victor, because no one wins.
