Self-identified “citizen of the world, animator and educator David Ehrlich has made over forty independent abstract films since 1974. His creative life began as an artist in New York from 1965 to 1975 before he moved to Vermont where animation became his chosen medium of expression. Rooted in his studies of sculpture and classical music, early works such as Dissipative Dialogues and Precious Metals flirt with representing recognizable objects; while the larger body of his later work, animated on transparent tracing paper and in clay, explore abstract forms of color, line and shape in a continual process of transformation. Years teaching in China led to rewarding collaborations with composers Fang Xin and Chenguan Tszo that further distinguish his work.
