Please join us for Prime Time Film Screenings: Family Matters, a series of films that explore the joy, mess, and tenderness of family dynamics. Each screening will be followed by an opportunity for conversation.
Crooklyn. 1994. USA. Directed by Spike Lee. 115 min.
Spike Lee’s most autobiographical film, penned with siblings Joie Susannah Lee and Cinqué Lee, brings us to the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in 1973 and a life-changing summer for nine-year-old tomboy Troy. This family drama examines domestic life in a Brooklyn brownstone set against a city block that contains the world.
Homebody. 2025. USA. Directed by Shruti Parekh. 22 min.
Brooklyn artist Amaryllis Ruiz finds herself locked out and facing eviction from the beloved rent-stabilized apartment she grew up in. When she learns she has legal grounding to inherit the lease but no lawyer to represent her, Amaryllis digs in and makes plans to hunker down at home. With memories of her vibrant mother’s spirit in their old home, Amaryllis becomes emboldened to stake her claim and resist through unconventional means.
This program will open with Homebody, a new short narrative film, followed by Crooklyn. Filmmaker Shruti Parekh will introduce her film and participate in a Q&A following both screenings.
