Disclosure Day. 2026. USA. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Screenplay by David Koepp. With Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson. DCP courtesy Universal Pictures. 145 min.
Steven Spielberg’s first film in four years brings him back to the subject that has fascinated him since childhood: alien life on Earth. After the wonder (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), the magic (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), and the terror (War of the Worlds), Spielberg leans on empathy in Disclosure Day. The film follows Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) as he attempts to uncover and release the top-secret work of the Wardex Corporation by distributing the contents of “The Archive,” a trove of documents and footage outlining decades of extraterrestrial activity on Earth going back to Roswell and President Richard Nixon. As Kellner goes on the run, Margaret Fairchild (an excellent Emily Blunt), a Kansas City meteorologist, is visited by a mysterious cardinal and suddenly gains the ability to read people’s thoughts and speak new languages, which draws her psychically to Kellner. Spielberg collaborated with David Koepp on the script, and the film has a fatherly touch, culminating in an emotionally cathartic finale.
