Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. 2026. USA. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun. With Hannah Einbinder, Gillian Anderson, Jack Haven. DCP courtesy MUBI. 112 min.
Hired to reboot a transphobic 1980s slasher franchise, a high-minded queer filmmaker (Hannah Einbinder) is drawn into the fictional world of Camp Miasma by its reclusive original star (Gillian Anderson), and endures a transformative experience of “flesh and fluids” that liberates her true self. The third film in trans filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun’s Screen Trilogy, after We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2022) and I Saw the TV Glow (2024), Teenage Sex and Death is gloriously bloody, “life-affirming horror.” Expressing personal histories of trans awakening and the “empowering process of transition” through the metaphors of digital media, television, and film, the series is a profoundly creative reflection on the visual aesthetics of the genre itself. In a period when the most important recent horror films (Sinners, Backrooms, Resident Evil) offer a fittingly bleak perspective on our troubled times, Schoenbrun’s surreal Teenage Sex and Death delivers a surprisingly playful, uplifting message. “Little Death,” the film’s astonishing, air-vent-headed slasher, is sure to enter the pantheon of beloved, death-dealing horror movie icons, and rightfully so.
