Duel. 1971. USA. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Screenplay by Richard Matheson, based on his short story. With Dennis Weaver. 4K restoration DCP. 90 min.
Originally produced as an ABC Movie of the Week, Duel features Dennis Weaver (on loan from TV’s McCloud) as David Mann, an agitated salesman on the road, dealing with unrest at home and at the office. His bad day is made much worse with the appearance of a menacing, seemingly unstoppable oil truck with an unseen driver that terrorizes him across an arid California desert. A 25-year-old Spielberg shot the film in 13 days and edited it in 10, delivering a movie so polished that Universal picked it up for theatrical release. The new 4K restoration sparkles, and it’s easy to see why this was the launching pad for Spielberg’s work on Jaws.
