Gunga Din. 1939. USA. Directed by George Stevens. Screenplay by Joel Sayre and Fred Guiol. With Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. 35mm. 117 min.
This rousing adventure film from George Stevens, based on Rudyard Kipling’s 1890 poem, is one of the 1930s action serials that heavily influenced Steven Spielberg and George Lucas as they developed Raiders of the Lost Ark, and specific sequences from Gunga Din were clearly on their minds as the Indiana Jones series progressed. Excitement and suspense aside, the film is undeniably dated and problematic in its stereotypical representation of Indian characters and its gung ho depiction of British imperialism.
