Bridge of Spies. 2015. USA. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Written by Matt Charman, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. With Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan. DCP. 141 min.

Based on the work of James Donovan (Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who in the late 1950s was tasked with representing the alleged Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (played with a subtle sparkle by Mark Rylance), Steven Spielberg’s Cold War espionage story is crisply evocative of the era. Donovan, a patriot in the most sincere sense, embraces his task even when it leads to an assignment in a recently divided Berlin. Spielberg’s latest historical thriller is a master class in screen direction, with a smart script cowritten by the Coen Brothers.

This film accompanies Sundays with Steven.
