Ang Lee’s groundbreaking Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon reimagines the wuxia tradition as an elegant fusion of martial arts, romance, and philosophical drama. When a legendary sword is stolen, two seasoned warriors (Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh) pursue a young martial artist (Zhang Ziyi) whose rebellious spirit draws her into a world of love, duty, and danger. Yuen Woo-ping’s choreography transforms combat into an extension of character and emotion. Bridging grounded martial discipline with poetic, dance-like wirework, he staged some of the most memorable combat sequences ever filmed, including an iconic duel balanced high atop a swaying bamboo forest. The film became an unprecedented international phenomenon and earned 10 Academy Award nominations, winning four, including Best Foreign Language Film.
