Going Home. 1972. USA. Directed by Adolfas Mekas. 16mm. 60 min.
Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania. 1972. UK/West Germany. Directed by Jonas Mekas. 16mm. 81 min.
Twenty-seven years after emigrating to the United States as refugees, Adolfas and Jonas Mekas returned to Semeniškiai, the Lithuanian village where they were born, to reunite with their mother and brothers before visiting the German labor camp where Adolfas and Jonas had been imprisoned during World War II. Going Home and Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania, shot by Adolfas and Jonas, respectively, remain among the most moving film diaries about exile and the ability of moving images to convey what is gained and lost amid the relentless passage of time and the cruel politics of displacement.
