Approx. runtime 114 min.
Inspired by the melodramas of Douglas Sirk, Rainer Werner Fassbinder cast his real-life lover, El Hedi ben Salem, and frequent collaborator Brigitte Mira in this love story about a younger Moroccan “guest worker” and an elderly German woman. Following their chance meeting on a rainy night in a working-class Munich bar, the pair find that her solitude and his sense of displacement are temporarily relieved in each other’s arms. But their unexpected relationship awakens the latent racism of everyone around them. A foundational work in the German director’s career, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul speaks to today’s social climate in the most crucial, moving ways. In House Orders and Inventory, Serbian director Želimir Žilnik speaks with Munich foreign workers and tenants about the restrictions imposed on their behavior and movement, and their hopes and plans for their future in West Germany.
