Bogotá Story. 2023. Colombia/USA. Directed by Esteban Pedraza. With Catalina Rey, Víctor Tarazona. DCP. In Spanish; English subtitles. 16 min.
Ixcanul. 2015. Guatemala/France. Written and directed by Jayro Bustamante. With María Mercedes Coroy, María Telón. DCP. In Kaqchikel, Spanish; English subtitles. 93 min.
Maria is a young Mayan Kaqchikel woman who lives near an active volcano in Guatemala, where she cultivates coffee with her parents. Despite her arranged betrothal to their plantation foreman, she falls in love with a younger man who promises to take her to the US for a life of wealth and prosperity in exchange for sexual intimacy. Shot on location in Kaqchikel with nonprofessional actors, Jayro Bustamante’s Ixcanul is a sensitive portrait of an underseen, neglected culture struggling for survival in a social system that pushes its people into invisibility. In Bogotá Story, Esteban Pedraza draws on his parents’ life stories to depict an intimate portrait of opportunity, immigration, and political violence in early-1990s Colombia.
