After portraying a mid-19th-century Swedish family’s monumental journey to the United States in The Emigrants, Jan Troell’s sequel follows their struggles as they settle in Minnesota and come to terms with hopes, regrets, and grief amid the upheavals of the Civil War and ongoing conflicts with Native Americans defending their land.

This film accompanies Immigrant Nation: People in Transit.
