It stands to reason that Miller’s fifth episode “Method Director” is a bittersweet affair. Special attention is paid to Scorsese’s longstanding partnership with Leonardo DiCaprio (and long-delayed first Oscar for The Departed) alongside his marriage to publisher Helen Morris and close relationship with their cinephile daughter Francesca. Without lapsing into saccharine nostalgia, Scorsese is more than ready to examine his extraordinary life in (mostly) hindsight, reflecting candidly on faith, sin, addiction, therapy, recovery and perseverance. Long the stuff of New Hollywood legend, this inimitable career is framed in painfully human terms by these unsparing interviews, which testify to Miller’s deep understanding of the work as well as her savvy as interlocutor.
