On the opening day of Ideas of Africa: Portraiture and Political Imagination, join us for a conversation in the exhibition’s galleries with the artist Silvia Rosi and MoMA’s Peter Schub Curator of Photography Oluremi C. Onabanjo.
Rosi has said, “I’m not just performing, but reflecting on history.” Through photographic self-portraits, she examines personal, familial, and national narratives of migration, memory, and belonging. Deeply informed by the history of West African studio portraiture, her images elegantly synthesize the formal strategies of mid-century African photographers, including many of those represented in Ideas of Africa. Situating Rosi’s practice within the exhibition and its themes, this program offers a deep dive into the lively, ever unfolding history of photography on the African continent and African Diaspora.
