Marty Supreme. 2025. USA. Directed by Josh Safdie. Screenplay by Safide, Ronald Bronstein. With Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion. DCP courtesy A24. 149 min.
Small balls lead to big things in Josh Safdie’s frenetic take on a real-life tale as wild as the worlds it sprang from. Set in the rough-and-tumble Lower East Side of New York in the 1950s, the film follows the exploits of Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), a ping-pong champ hell-bent on conquering the world of table tennis. Careening from his dead-end job at a shoe store, where he hooks up with his married best friend Rachel (a breakout turn from Odessa A’zion), to the global table-tennis circuit, to glittery uptown circles (where Gwyneth Paltrow reigns as a fading actress-turned-socialite), Marty can’t stop creating chaos—even when he lands the shot.
